Historically, the Chinese auto market has been dominated by large state-owned firms like Chang’an Auto, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. (SAIC), and Dongfeng Motor. But over the past two decades, private firms like BYD Auto and Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) have become more important to China’s growing car market, which surged past the U.S. to become the world leader in total number of units sold in 2009. After declines in car sales in 2018 and continuing into the COVID-19 pandemic, sales once again saw a year-on-year increase in 2021.

Foreign auto firms for decades were restricted from operating independently in China, but in 2022 China officially ended requirements that car manufacturing operations be at least 50 percent owned by domestic firms. Tesla is the only foreign firm which owns 100 percent of manufacturing operations in China as of January 2023. China is also an important market for some foreign firms, especially luxury automakers like BMW and Audi.

China’s government is making a concerted effort to establish itself as a leader in the new energy vehicle space, providing subsidies and tax exemptions aimed at promoting the industry. As a result electric vehicle sales have boomed, with BYD, a joint venture between SAIC, General Motors and Wuling, and Tesla leading sales in recent years. Chinese firms are also leading industries to support the new energy vehicle ecosystem, such as battery-makers CATL and CALB, and software providers including Alibaba, Huawei, DJI and others.
